Independent Artwork
Moments
Moments taps into nostalgia to romanticise modern life. This series of images were inspired by the idealising of 19th and 20th Century European society depicted through Impressionist styles of art (like that of Edgar Degas & Claude Monet), as well as the influence of nostalgia on present day style and culture – in particular that of the 1990’s. These works challenge the somewhat nihilistic view we tend to take towards the present, yearning for simpler times, by instead recognising the beauty and joy in present day scenes.
Impressionists painted the realities of the world around them using bright, dazzling colours, concentrating primarily on the effects of light, and hoping to infuse their scenes with immediacy. Here, original iPhone photos and Instagram video screenshots transition though filters in the style of disposable camera images popularised in the 1990’s, and then manipulated with effects of Impressionist oil paintings. Thereby reflecting the evolution of techniques available to create art as technologies have transitional to present day.
Light Painting Photography
Photographic technique of moving a light source while taking a long exposure photograph, either to illuminate a subject or space, or to shine light at the camera to 'draw', or by moving the camera itself during exposure of light sources.
Sumi-e Ink
Sumi-e is the Japanese word for Black Ink Painting. Emphasis is placed on the beauty of each individual stroke of the brush. Sumi-e is spiritually rooted in Zen Buddhism, creating strokes in the moment with a style and spirit of physical immersion, meditation with a brush to embody a motif.
