Gold Mine

Gold Mine experiments with materials innovation to capture the idea of sustainability and childhood recollections through textiles to create an experience of tactile treasure. The collection fuses the natural phenomenon of gold as a chemical element with elements of my personal history and design practice through the use of gold colouration, layering, shape and malleability, and natural materials. The textiles are influenced in particular by a personal love for gold and magpie tendencies of collecting opulent mementos, connection to repeated geometric shapes that allow for art as therapy, exposure to craft as a child, and an upbringing in Japan and on a farm in New Zealand. Both environmental and personal elements are channelled into this collection of textiles to explore memories within textile objects and what is precious and innovative for future generations.

Gold Mine is a collection of moulds - malleable wall hangings and interior sculptures. Gold Mine creates an experience of tactile treasure, with an emphasis on the opulent colour gold created through coloured beeswax hand coated on fabrics, and the ways it can take different forms and shapes through these unique textiles. Materials innovation and sustainability are at the core of the design process, with an emphasis on the use of natural fibres and materials. Gold Mine creates a memorable sensory experience not only by sight and touch, but also with the fragrant scent of beeswax infused in each textile.
